Collins' motive on plant vote questioned
But the actions of at least one commissioner suggest they took into consideration more than just land-use issues.
More shaking going on
The blast at 3 p.m. Monday in Lake Las Vegas, the exclusive resort community that is home to movie stars, professional athletes, power brokers and other celebrities such as Celine Dion, so far has produced reports of only two broken windows, one at a home and one at a business.
New code could come to rescue of ignored tenants
The Henderson woman said she has been unsuccessful in trying to get her landlord to fix electrical outlets, two broken showers, leaking sinks and a broken window since she moved into the Atlantic City apartment complex on Haren Drive in October.
Camp Sanford
For two weeks beginning Sunday, Mike Sanford's name will be on four football camps at UNLV, and the Rebels' assistant coaches will be working overtime as more than 600 campers descend on the university's practice field.
Homeowner associations face scrutiny
CARSON CITY - Complaints are piling up in a state agency about the conduct of homeowner associations in Clark County, and some legislators are increasingly unhappy over lengthy delays in reaching solutions.
Chef just tasting the waters
Elise Eden and Richard Craft planned to peruse the art galleries at Holsum Lofts on Friday, but instead were seduced by the aroma luring them into a cooking demonstration at Cheflive.
Early warning plans to get grant
Although the $20.5 million grant to the Nevada Homeland Security Commission is a 25 percent reduction from the $27.5 million received last year, Nevada officials took comfort from the fact that their loss was less than that of other states.
Jeff Haney sets the record straight about an American icon in the art world - Cassius Coolidge's lovable dogs playing poker
In a column last week, I suggested the iconic series of paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was about to be eclipsed by a new wave of more sophisticated, contemporary poker art.

Letter: Reid has public's best interest at heart
Sen. Harry Reid is such an asset to this state in more ways than I have space to comment. He is the one public servant I find myself more times shaking my head affirmatively with versus trying to figure out what the heck Sen. John Ensign and Congressman Jon Porter, for example, are doing to better the lives of "all" Nevadans.
Editorial: When the clerk is a teacher
At any gathering of local teachers, such as a faculty meeting or training workshop, anyone attending could look around and know that more than four out of every 10 are working a second job.
25-year-old law may finally be used
That, however, may soon change.
Letter: A nuclear Iran is something to fear
The United States (and a lot of other countries) is worried about Iran becoming nuclear capable. What does he think they will do with nuclear reactors? Use it to light their homes? Last time I checked they have enough of that black stuff in the ground to last them about what, 100, 200 years? No one can tell me they won't produce nuclear weapons of their own.
Editorial: Sick of high prices
According to a story in Tuesday's Las Vegas Sun, the Canadian pharmacies licensed to provide medicines to Nevadans have been receiving about 30 calls a day, about a third of which involve orders. State law allows Nevadans to order medicines by mail from four pharmacies in Canada that have been licensed by the Nevada Board of Pharmacy. Two other Canadian pharmacies are under consideration.
Editorial: Swimming toward survival
Dace exist nowhere in the world except within a few miles of the upper Muddy River and within the warm springs of the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge, about 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The refuge was created in 1979, specifically to protect the 3-inch fish from becoming extinct.
Letter: Bush has country's priorities out of order
The ruling party seems to have no problem approving billions upon billions to continue the killing in Iraq or preparing national energy policies behind closed doors with oil executives, who then make record profits off the resulting policy, which to them is good government. Spy on American citizens without proper authorization? Sure, that sounds like a winner to them. And running our national deficit up to record levels, while giving handouts to the wealthy and program cuts to the poor, suits them just fine.
Letter: Gay marriage is the least of our worries
So, what do they do? They revive a proposed constitutional amendment on gay marriages. I couldn't care less about this in light of the problems this country faces with the Iraq war, the bellicose posturing with Iran, the oil crisis, global warming, exportation of jobs overseas, illegal immigration, our national trade deficit, etc. The administration is reviving its push for the constitutional amendment to appease and revive the support of the religious zealots and take attention away from the most serious problems facing this country.
Jon Ralston gives Clark County public school teachers their due
It may not be the Tender Loving Care some teachers need and have every right to demand considering what they do every day. But the Teaching and Learning Conditions survey recently completed by the district - and first reported on Tuesday by the Sun's Emily Richmond - exposes some canards routinely put forth by education establishment critics.
Liquor lobby fights to shut down sobriety checkpoints
The American Beverage Institute issued a press release Monday demanding that police agencies focus as much effort on catching negligent drivers - including ones who are sleepy, distracted or reckless - as they do on catching drunken drivers. Police, it said, should stop using their resources to man "misguided" sobriety checkpoints.
