Letter: Terrorism war fought on false battle ground
Friday, June 2, 2006 | 7:19 a.m.
The main point of F. Jay Harrell's May 29 letter - "How many wake-up calls do we need?" - is that the war in Iraq is the focus of the "Global War against Terrorism." That is just plain nonsense. The fight against terrorism was originally and correctly focused on Osama bin Laden and the regime that harbored terrorism in Afghanistan.
Remove the Taliban from control, find and punish the man behind the 9/11 attacks, work with other nations to find and eliminate terrorist cells wherever they may be, attempt to circumvent the flow of money to terrorist organizations, and shore up our internal defenses to thwart future attacks. That is what we needed to do to prevent another 9/11 or similar event.
The ill-advised (even by Colin Powell and others in the Bush White House) invasion of Iraq on flimsy, perhaps made-up, intelligence has absolutely nothing to do with fighting terrorism and everything to do with Bush not being of the proper mettle to be leader of the free world. It's really that simple.
