Letter: Immigration control is doable but won’t occur
Thursday, June 1, 2006 | 7:24 a.m.
Regarding the points raised in the May 29 Sun by T.J. Bonner, the head of the labor union that represents U.S. Border Patrol agents:
Creating a counterfeit-proof Social Security card and enforcing stiff penalties against employers who hire undocumented workers would be the cheapest and most effective way to deal with the illegal immigration problem. If the undocumented can't find work, they will leave and take their families with them.
This won't happen, however, because neither political party wants to incur the wrath of the public (voters) when the loss of this cheap labor source results in the increase in worker wages and the price of goods and services. The majority of U.S. citizens say they want illegal immigration stopped, but I believe these same people will feel differently when they have to pay $3 for a head of lettuce.
