Letter: Bush doesn’t compare favorably to Truman

President Bush, in a speech recently delivered to the U.S. Military Academy graduating class, attempted parallelisms or similarities of his administration to that of Harry Truman. A tough sale, indeed.

I remember President Truman, having served in the military during the Korean conflict while he was president.

Truman was guided by honesty and integrity. I always believed and still do that he told the unvarnished truth to the American people. He shunned publicity, choosing to go with "The Marshall Plan" rather than "The Truman Plan" because he thought it would have a better chance of congressional passage. He fired a popular general because he feared that general advocated expanding the Korean War. He stared down the Soviets at the pinnacle of their military might and broke the blockade of Berlin. He was an uncomplicated individual and shunned the spotlight.

I didn't personally know Truman, but I felt he was a friend of mine.

And George W. Bush, you are no Harry Truman!
