Letter: ‘Free trade’ keeps the borders open

Why did successive Congresses and President Clinton and President Bush neglect their duties by not enforcing federal laws on illegal immigration?

Why is Congress so slow to act today?

I have the answer: free trade.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the latest one, the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), promise a higher standard of living and less illegal immigration. But CAFTA will fail as NAFTA failed before it.

Written into NAFTA was the proposed CANAMEX, a four-lane highway to facilitate trade from Mexico to Canada, which guarantees that border security would be sacrificed to "free" trade. When traffic is heavy, do you think it will be slowed to permit inspections?

If you want open borders, call Nevada's congressional delegation. Ask the members to give you their views on open borders and CANAMEX - in writing.
