Letter: Vegas should not recycle California’s mistake

In Upland, Calif., we had a recycling center that paid by weight for cans, clear glass, colored glass, newspapers, etc. School classes, scouts, churches and other groups would have drives to collect these items to raise funds for various reasons.

It all worked out very well, until the city decided it would like to have that extra money, so they started a "recycling program." This involved raising the trash collection rates to pay for it - so we were paying more each month for the city to make money on items we were separating and putting out for them to pick up.

The city even came up with a law to stop anyone from taking recyclables from in front of a house - apparently poor people were stealing this trash from the city.

This could be your future, folks! To cut down trash collection by half would mean you are paying twice as much for each collection.
