Letter: President has stayed true to his word

Sunday, July 23, 2006 | 7:42 a.m.

Regarding Nathan Henssler's July 20 letter, which the Sun headlined, "Bush does not represent the will of the people":

We must remember that President Bush promised during his campaigns for president that he would not allow federal taxes to be spent on "embryonic" stem-cell research.

President Bush has principles and is fulfilling one of the campaign promises that got him elected! I know that is a rarity in America in this day and age, but there are still Americans with moral principles that they will not violate, irrespective of the benefits that may accrue to them personally.

Mr. Henssler asks how President Bush comes to the conclusion that some Americans consider embryonic stem-cell research murder. The answer is logical. No one can create a human embryo without creating a human and no one can do "embryonic" stem-cell research without killing that human embryo!

Unfortunately there is nothing in federal law that prevents private companies or even states from doing this type of research. California is spending billions. Ironically, there are many ways of doing stem-cell research that do not require killing babies. Embryonic stem-cell research may be the easiest path, but the easy way is very often not the right way.
