FLASHPOINT for Jul 21, 2006

If you needed another sign that Nevada's first midsummer primary is going to evoke minimal interest, there is one. When the sloths and ignoramuses start trundling to the polls on July 29, missing out on any salient information in the next fortnight-plus, we will get a better idea of just how abysmal the turnout will be for the primary. But the other factor is absentee balloting, and requests for mail ballots also seem to be down this year. Just over 15,000 requests have come into the election department; almost 19,000 came in two years ago. It will be even more interesting to see how many are returned - or if people remember to do so before Aug. 15, perhaps forgetting the primary no longer is in September.
