Summary Box: Wisconsin court clears the way for Indian gambling

Friday, July 14, 2006 | 4:13 a.m.

WHAT HAPPENED?: The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that existing American Indian casinos can continue to operate and expand.

WHO WON?: The decision was a clear victory for the 11 tribes that operate 28 casinos in Wisconsin and Gov. Jim Doyle, who successfully argued he could negotiate gambling compacts with the tribes.

WHO LOST?: Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha brought the lawsuit, arguing that a 1993 constitutional amendment prohibited Indian gambling.

WHAT'S NEXT: Dairyland said it will proceed with plans to sell the track for $40.5 million to the Menominee Indian Tribe, which wants to build a casino on the land.
