Letter: A little consideration from smokers, please

Friday, July 14, 2006 | 7:38 a.m.

It will never cease to amaze me how blind some people still are about secondhand smoke. As we all know, you cannot fly to China, which is a 16-hour flight from Los Angeles, and smoke even one cigarette.

Why should we be subjected to someone else's nasty, disgusting and dangerous habit just because they want to have a cigarette during or after a meal? (Meals average about 30 minutes by the way.) To smokers, and I am sure I speak for all other nonsmokers, step outside and ply your disgusting and dangerous habit.

The carcinogens in secondhand smoke have been proven to be 30 times more dangerous than standing on the busiest street corner in the biggest city in America and breathing the polluted air. Why do smokers think they can't smoke in hospitals, workplaces or in office buildings anymore? Because people don't want to be exposed to those noxious fumes anymore.

If a smoker wants to take his life into his hands that is his right, but he shouldn't complain when people who don't share his views stand up and fight for their right to live.
