THE ELEVATOR

Who's headed toward the penthouse on the local sports scene - and who's getting the shaft.
GOING UP
Father-and-child reunions
Thanks to one of those obscure NCAA rules with a bunch of numbers and a hyphen in it, a good college basketball player named Kevin Kruger will be able to play for a good college basketball coach named Lon Kruger without having to sit out a year like most guys who lead their Pac-10 schools in scoring before transferring. So, I'm here to give Rebels fans the not-so-false hope that this father-and-child reunion may mean an NCAA tournament berth is only a motion away
Greg Maddux bobblehead dolls
Actually, those will be going up and down at Cashman Field Friday night when the first 2,500 fans through the turnstiles will receive a bobblehead doll depicting future Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux in a Valley High uniform. For bobbleheads scoring at home, it's now Mayor Goodman 11, Greg Maddux 1.
World Cup betting
They say it's not a real sport until you can bet on it in Las Vegas. Well, brace up America. Betting on the World Cup reportedly was way up at the local sports wagering parlors, as were the in-house crowds corner-kicking their money away on Brazil and the over.
GOING DOWN
Local recruits
Signing up high school stars to stay at home is always easier said than done when half - make that three-quarters - of the fun of going to college is getting away from your parents. That is the reason that former Cheyenne High star running back Torrie Coleman is leaving Las Vegas. Apparently, it's hard to concentrate on playing football when your mom keeps harping about taking out the trash.
Defense at the Vegas Summer League
I'd have to go back and check the box scores, but I believe the last time anybody took a charge in an NBA summer league game at Cox Pavilion was when Visa set up a souvenir stand on the concourse.
Silly boxing wagers
When Fernando Vargas asked Shane Mosley to go double or nothing on the $100,000 bet that Vargas honored after their last fight, Mosley said why not make it a million? On second thought, why not just make it a bazillion or a gazillion and pay it off in three easy installments, like ordering CDs from the Time Warner library?
