Letter: Earning potential starts with work ethic

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 | 7:18 a.m.

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's July 10 editorial, "Scrooge act getting old":

After reading your editorial about the minimum wage, several thoughts occurred to me that may be helpful to some.

It should really be called a starting wage and, if you're over 21 and still making the minimum, then maybe you're the problem.

If you are, I offer this advice that my granddad gave me decades ago: Be the first to show up for work, be the last to leave and always ask your boss if there is anything else that needs to be done. Do a good job, make yourself valuable, take the initiative and soon you'll get a raise.

It's been years since I worked as a wage slave. I didn't care for it much. After I finally burnt myself out in the corporate world, I started my own business. Things didn't work out at first, but I eventually got the hang of it. Persistence and determination beat out talent and money every time.

And another thing, if you think you need to rely on the government for help, you'll never get what you want. Oh, you may get enough to get by on, but not much else.

This is America, the land of opportunity. Go for it!
