Letter: Republic’s recycling plan is a starting point
Tuesday, July 11, 2006 | 7:29 a.m.
I want to offer yet another opinion regarding the recycling proposal by Republic Services.
First, Republic has picked up my trash twice a week, without missing one pickup, in the nearly two years I have lived at my house. I don't see a lack of service on its part.
Second, and more importantly, I do not believe that educational campaigns and other alternatives being proposed will do any good when it comes to recycling. Find me a person in this country who has not heard of recycling; continuing to tell us to do it is pointless. We need alternatives that make recycling easy and convenient.
I'm sure there will be glitches with Republic's plan; nothing is perfect. But we cannot afford to ignore the facts anymore. We have to make changes, and Republic's plan is at least a starting point.
If we can make it easier for people, maybe they'll start building new habits. Let's start with Republic's plan, and we can work out the bugs from there.
