Letter: Eventually, lawsuit will end smoking
Friday, July 7, 2006 | 7:22 a.m.
Recently, there have been several studies as well as reports from the Surgeon General's office that point to secondhand smoke being a health risk, especially to children.
The "freedom" to smoke in casinos will be ended soon by the casinos themselves. Some day soon, a casino will have to pay a huge judgment to some unfortunate employee who developed lung cancer from exposure to secondhand smoke while on the job.
This is not limited to their employees. A regular casino patron exposed to secondhand smoke may also decide to sue his favorite casino. Casinos are first and foremost businesses. As such, they need to minimize their exposure to risk.
Workers are due compensation for injuries caused at the workplace. Employers have a duty to provide a healthy and safe work environment.
