Letter: Valedictorian backed by Bill of Rights

Tuesday, July 4, 2006 | 7:24 a.m.

Tony Tharp makes a valid point in his July 2 letter, "Foothill valedictorian has right to be heard": The problem the Clark County School District had with Brittany McComb's valedictory address was the content, and they abruptly censored her in midsentence.

Have we now shredded the Bill of Rights to say that if your content is politically correct, you can speak? But if not, we'll shut you down!

With this kind of reasoning, the men who signed the Declaration of Independence - the men who we are honoring this very week - would have been silenced because their speech didn't uphold the existing political climate.

And the same would have happened to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke up when he saw injustices.

Free speech is exactly that - uncensored (as defined by the U.S. Supreme Court)!
