Letter: Change in collection program problematic

Regarding Republic Services' idea to "improve" the recycling program in Clark County, I see no enhancement whatsoever. Currently the three small containers work very well for those who elect to recycle. Try using an education program for residents to increase participation by either the local media or residential mailings similar to gas, water and power conservation.

Dumping all recyclables into one container will be interesting to say the least, i.e. broken bottles, paint cans etc. What thought has been given to residents who contribute used motor oil that is currently picked up as a recycled product?

Currently, the recycling trucks in use provide for a separation of paper, plastic and glass, and the driver in our neighborhood is diligent in processing each "basket" into the allocated truck bin. Motor oil is always picked up now and taken by the driver when the oil is stored in the sealed container. What is wrong with that? I doubt water reclamation wants the oil dumped into the sewer system, as easy access is located in front of most homes.

Educate the citizens on the value of recycling instead of defeating current accomplishments.

Also, once-a-week collection of garbage is not practical in Clark County. Much of the excess that is currently picked up by Republic Services twice a week will find its way to vacant areas or blow into the neighborhoods.
