Letter: Change in collection program problematic
Dumping all recyclables into one container will be interesting to say the least, i.e. broken bottles, paint cans etc. What thought has been given to residents who contribute used motor oil that is currently picked up as a recycled product?
Editorial: Partnering for students
But why not move high school closer to what lies ahead, through course offerings that bridge the divide between college and other career choices? The past several years have seen movement in this direction, with more cooperation between high schools and colleges.
Harter proud of her accomplishments at UNLV
Put her in a golf cart and Carol Harter is a scary driver.
The odd couple
Felix and Oscar are on the road.
John Katsilometes reports on the quick, chance meeting between Paul McCartney and Roy Horn on the red carpet at Friday's 'Love' gala opening
Horn and longtime performing partner Siegfried Fischbacher had just finished their arduous trek across the carpet and Horn (who had been leaning on a cane) settled to an awaiting wheelchair with a bit of help from the duo's assistant, Lynette Chappell. Several feet behind them, McCartney was moving swiftly across the carpet and actually breezed past the Goulets (Robert and Vera) while calling out, "I've got to run ahead of you guys."
Stand-in stand-up steps in for Anderson

Editorial: Not your ordinary camp
A tangible product of that thought is the National Military Family Association (www.nmfa.org), which offers a variety of support services. One of the services is a summer camping experience for children of deployed service members, including those members who are serving in the National Guard and Reserves.
Letter: Leaders should not compromise on language
It was disturbing to me to learn that Nevada has passed a law requiring car dealers to carry contracts and credit applications in Spanish as well as English. How ridiculous! Why not also require dealers to have contracts in Tagalog, Chinese, Korean, Thai, French, etc., as well?
Letter: Foothill valedictorian has right to be heard
When our Founding Fathers created our Constitution, they saw what had happened with the Church of England and saw how it affected the people's religious freedoms and provided language that would prevent the same thing from happening in this country. The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech ..."
Hal Rothman on why this nation needs a Statue of Responsibility
When Paul Revere looked across at the Old North Church to see if the British were coming by land or sea, he had a pretty good idea of what freedom meant. In the world of the 18th century, freedom was the right to do as you pleased within the confines that your larger community established. This was more than enough in his era; after all, they were less than a century removed from the Salem witch trials.
Editorial: Homes for new teachers
Hundreds of new teachers attended the "Coming Home" workshops, which started last fall as a recruiting program. Housing prices are slowly dropping in the Las Vegas Valley, but they can initially seem prohibitive for new teachers or those who have been in the district for only a short while.
Letter: Religion's impact is seen everywhere
The school's actions have been compared to communist censoring of religion when our democracy has just as much to fear from the rise of religious fundamentalism. In his book "American Theocracy," Kevin Phillips has said that "Ralph Reed admitted that stealth and furtiveness are tactics of the Christian Coalition. They don't like to acknowledge what it is doing or where. They want to minimize public attention to its influence and back stairs power."
No honeymoon for UNLV boss
There's a new fine arts class at UNLV these days: the art of sucking up. People are lining up to meet incoming President David Ashley - taking his measure and pitching their agendas. In a whirlwind of meet-and-greets, all eyes are on the man who was recruited from the provost job at the University of California, Merced.
Brian Greenspun on how Bush could benefit from a dose of humility
My father was a very tolerant man when it came to his children. He had to be because the challenges were great. But there was one thing he insisted on that we would never be. One thing that he drilled in our heads that was intolerable. One thing that he could never abide in his kids.

Jeff Simpson on the mother of all resort booms that's heading to a Strip near you
I've recently met with a number of top Las Vegas resort executives to learn about their plans to change the city's skyline.
Jack Sheehan takes the story of 'Melvin and Howard' another step as Hughes' pilot talks and the search continues for girlfriend Sunny
To qualify as an icon in my book you have to be nearly as popular in death as in life. The Big E and Ol' Blue Eyes clearly qualify. Their estates today earn nearly as much money after their deaths as they did in their primes.
Immigration debate can hurt local GOP
The U.S. House is stirring the debate by scheduling public hearings across the country on legislation the chamber approved last year. It calls for tough border controls and new enforcement mechanisms to curtail illegal immigration. With public opinion polls showing that a majority of Americans support those provisions, Republicans hope the hearings will improve their chances to retain control of Congress despite a surge in Democratic popularity among voters.
