Speed Reading: NASCAR’s preseason thunder
Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006 | 8:55 a.m.
What happened: Twenty-four drivers took part in the test Monday, but the biggest news was made off the track. LVMS formally announced its $27 million track reconfiguration and infield renovation plans.
What didn't happen: Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge, didn't lose it when an invited fan showed up at the LVMS press conference wearing a Budweiser jacket.
Best Paint Job: Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet was one of the few cars that was race ready ... as far as paint and sponsor decals go. But he's still searching for speed on the 1.5-mile LVMS oval.
Worst Paint Job: Chad Chaffin's (yes, THE Chad Chaffin) No. 92 Chevrolet, which appeared to have been primered with Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard. Chaffin's team is searching for speed and a sponsor.
Quote of the Day: "He can definitely win (the Las Vegas) race and have a shot at the championship. If he makes the Chase (for the Nextel Cup), he's going to be the dark horse (for the championship) this year." -- Kurt Busch on his younger brother, Kyle.
