Letter: November elections offer slice of hope

Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006 | 9:26 a.m.

Bob Herbert's column entitled "Bush's fatal flaw: Hubris, incompetence," which appeared in the Jan. 28 edition of the Las Vegas Sun, was right on. It moved immediately to the heart of the problem -- the president's arrogant incompetence. That incompetence has been shown in every initiative of the current administration.

It would take volumes in which to itemize all of his failed initiatives. They can best be highlighted by the mounting death toll in Iraq of both GIs and Iraqi civilians with no end in sight, the lack of adequate preparation and response to Hurricane Katrina, and the mounting energy costs and the skyrocketing national debt.

The big question remains: What can be done about it? You hear murmurs in the background of the dreaded word "impeachment." But is that realistic in light of the established line of succession? Look at who would fill his place and be at the reins of the government, sitting in the Oval Office -- Dick Cheney. What hell would he bring to our nation and the world? If another heart attack did him in, who then but House Speaker Dennis Hastert. The problem is formidable. Where does the nation go for a solution?

There are three years left in Bush's presidency. The only hope left is that as a result of November's election, the Democrats will gain control of either the House or the Senate. From that leverage, some brakes can be applied to Bush's fanaticism.
