Letter: What chances did ‘Brokeback’ take?

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 | 8:46 a.m.

William Stewart, in his Jan. 22 letter about "Brokeback Mountain," stated that the purpose of the Golden Globe Awards was to "reward films (and those people who make them) for taking chances ... improving the art form."

But if that is the case, the makers of "The Passion of the Christ" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" went out on the limb. Need we be reminded that society has removed prayer from our schools, society wants to eliminate "In God We Trust" from our currency and society removed the Ten Commandments from a state building. The filmmakers of "The Passion of the Christ" and "Narnia" took the chances.

Newspapers, magazines and television portray the alternative lifestyle as acceptable. So what chances did the filmmakers take with "Brokeback Mountain?"

The "Passion of the Christ" was about a man who believed in the truth and would not waver from it even though he knew he was going to be tortured and crucified.

Who took the chance? Who displayed the courage?
