Editorial: Bert the Turtle, post-9/11
Before 9/11 such scenes were recalled with amused nostalgia. Today, however, with terrorism a continuing threat, it is a serious matter to prepare children as well as adults for sudden emergencies. The Department of Homeland Security recognizes this and is getting ready to launch a program called "Ready Kids."
Inmates learn to make it on the outside
It's not easy getting out of prison.
Editorial: Burning questions in Oregon
The research, the results of which were published Friday in the journal Science, was led by an Oregon State graduate student, whose team studied the region burned in southwest Oregon's 2002 Biscuit Fire.
Flashpoint for Jan. 23, 2006
Much of the chatter during the last week has been about how much the various candidates raised. But what about what they spent that money on? Rep. Jim Gibbons spent about $600,000, but he has a lot of consultants. So does Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, who spent about half that much. By contrast, Sen. Minority Leader Dina Titus spent about half of what Gibson did. And she's the fiscal liberal in this race? The funniest expense on any report I have seen so far, though, comes from Speaker-in-Waiting Barbara Buckley. Seems someone bought campaign supplies worth $199.30 at the dreaded ...
Editorial: Ogling Google's user records

Career at a crossroads
As he sat on his stool after the sixth round Saturday night, having taken a vicious pounding from Manny Pacquiao's fists, Erik Morales looked every bit a man on the way to his third loss in four fights.
For rent: Rooms with a view
In an age of excess in a city of excess, the home of Nico Santucci might be considered by some to be excessive.
A prescription for disaster?
With an ever-increasing older population and a large portion of its medical professionals nearing retirement age, the Las Vegas area could be on the verge of a health care crisis.

Letter: Iraq has just diverted attention from Iran
When Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona was asked recently what actions should be taken to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb, he said "there are no good options." He should have also added a footnote, saying that anyone who believes the Iraq war has made the world a safer place in which to live needs to have their heads examined.
Columnist Jeff Haney: An early look at some unspectacular but profitable Super Bowl 'props' likely to hit the betting boards
With the Super Bowl less than two weeks away, the minds of sports bettors in Las Vegas are turning to the propositions -- or "props," meaning unique, offbeat wagering opportunities -- that sports books will be offering on the big game.
Editorial: Want to smoke? Blow it in your own face
I do, however, notice how smokers always hold their cigarettes ... so the smoke does not go into their own faces. I visit Las Vegas three or more times a year. I plan to continue, but I wish the smokers could learn some manners and show some respect to nonsmokers. I do not want the smoke in my face, either!
Bush eyes Yucca funds
WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration as early as next month is expected to renew efforts to give the Energy Department expanded access to a national fund created to pay for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
