Letter: Alaska not the key to energy woes
Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006 | 9:27 a.m.
It is apparent that reader Bob Lewicki has bought into the Bush administration4s claim that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will help solve our energy crisis.
He, and others like him, should be aware that even if the oil companies had permission to drill there, it would be much more than a decade for this oil to be realized.
He should also be aware that all those oil company signs around the Las Vegas Valley belong to global oil companies, whose loyalties are to their stockholders, not the United States. If they were to find oil in the ANWR, there is no guarantee that they would ship it to the lower 48 states.
The solution to our dependence on fossil fuels is to actively seek other forms of energy, while pro-ducing vehicles that deliver high mileage.
