Letter: Smoke or no smoke, people will come to Vegas
Monday, Jan. 16, 2006 | 8:26 a.m.
On a recent flight from Las Vegas to Detroit, I read Portia Hamlar's comments on her recent visit to our city in her Jan. 10 letter with the headline, "This nonsmoker won't be returning."
Nevada residents and visitors will not benefit from her proposal to improve ventilation systems at casinos/hotels and theaters. Such a proposal would require that these businesses be monitored to ensure compliance.
Our state slogan is "Battle Born," which I interpret as cherishing freedom and our right to choice. This also applies to companies. Our city motto is "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." This is how the rest of the world views Las Vegas.
We continue to be the fastest-growing city in America. Over 33 million visitors chose Las Vegas as their destination in 2005. So Hamlar's threat to not return to Las Vegas until regulations are imposed was music to my ears! May I suggest California.
Unfortunately for me, I'm forced to visit Hamlar's home state -- Michigan -- a minimum of four times a year!
