Letter: Be careful when addressing big issues
Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006 | 9:17 a.m.
Every day newspapers choose from thousands of letters a few to publish. Quite often you choose one that says essentially, "women still aren't allowed to decide what to do with their own bodies," as a Monday letter from Tanya Brown stated.
If this were really the issue, some letters would press for:
* Let's allow public nudity
* Let's end the necessity for prescriptions for drugs
* Let's allow prostitution
* Let us decide about our own seat belts and helmets
No, the issue is not about personal freedom, it is about the killing of babies. Legislative bodies should publicly debate when a cell becomes a person, and pass compromise laws about who has what right to kill such a person. Certainly one's physical and mental health is compromised when there is an abusive spouse or neighbor, or when one's children are annoying, etc., but killing is not the only answer.
Please, you folks in the media, be honest in addressing important issues, including what letters you choose to publish.
