Letter: ‘Brokeback Mountain’ a compassionate film

Regarding Linda Caterine's Dec. 30 letter about the movie "Brokeback Mountain": She says the movie is all hype yet states the movie's limited release did not compare to mainstream features in wide release. How could it? She also states that 95 percent of the world is straight when it is a proven fact that at least 10 percent is gay. Let's get our facts straight.
I saw the movie on its opening day in Las Vegas and the theater was so crowded we had to come back to the next viewing.
The film is compassionate, thought-provoking and deals with the real dilemma dealt with daily by people struggling to be themselves in a society that tells them they are degenerates.
There was no gratuitous sex or nudity, just stellar performances by brave young actors. I read that the Christian right is boycotting the movie -- what else is new? Why don't they put their efforts into some of the films that have unmarried couples sleeping around as well?
It is time a movie is made that shows characters who have gay feelings and presented as true human beings and not stereotypes. "Brokeback Mountain" accomplishes this in a very well written, beautifully shot, and brilliantly acted piece of art.
