Tennis, everyone?

The Stacy and Amanda Darling Memorial Tennis Center went through some costly - though not as much as expected - repairs and upgrades in preparation for next week's Tennis Channel Open professional tournament.

And luckily, if there's a fault called during the tournament, it will be because a player's serve is long, not because of physical shortcomings with the courts themselves.

"Everything is done and it's beautiful," said Steve Houchens, a deputy Las Vegas city manager who oversaw the repairs at the new courts.

The city spent about $535,000 to ready the courts for the tournament, including repairing cracks that began appearing last fall on all 23 courts less than two months after the new tennis complex opened at Washington Buffalo Park.

The price tag had been expected to be more than $600,000.

Las Vegas also will spend about $165,000 on parking attendants, electrical generators and phones during the weeklong tournament.
