Letter: Strong leaders make mass transit work
Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 | 12:30 p.m.
The Las Vegas Sun's Feb. 12 article on Las Vegas' transit system, "Getting public on board," was very interesting.
I have just returned from seven weeks in Honolulu and saw firsthand what can be accomplished with forward-thinking and practical elected officials at the helm.
Oahu is at least as strapped for funds as Clark County, yet it has managed to maintain a public transit system to be proud of. All we in Clark County seem to get are self-congratulatory statements from a nonresponsive bureaucracy telling us what a great job they are doing while they farm out the running of CAT to a for-profit corporation.
That corporation has produced a system with no north-south service west of Rainbow, no transfers and infrequent, uncoordinated scheduling.
