Letter: Simple way to help gas-conserving drivers

Regarding Daniel Olivier's Feb. 12 letter, "An alternative to imposing a gasoline tax," in which he proposes that the government outlaw most personal cars that have more than four or six cylinders (unless they average at least 25 mpg):

Mr. Olivier's solution sounds like a lawyer's utopia - imagine the lawsuits telling people the kinds and sizes of automobiles we can own.

The simple solution: When you register every year, the fees should be based on the cubic-inch displacement of the engine and the weight of the automobile. Cubic inch takes care of the gas mileage, weight takes care of wear and tear of the roads. This formula gives the people driving small, gasoline-conserving cars a break.

Let the drivers of the big tanks pay the price. Of course, this solution is so simple don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.
