Letter: Funeral wrongly used as platform for politics

Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006 | 12:31 p.m.

Former President Bill Clinton, while speaking at Coretta Scott King's funeral, said it all when he said that we "must remember that a woman, who shed tears, got angry ... is the reason for this gathering." Unlike former President Jimmy Carter, Clinton did not seek to turn this occasion into a political rally for the most liberal of Americans. Unlike several other speakers, he did not seek to deride President Bush for protecting America.

In the current times, as the Islamic radicals seek to turn their anger against Israel, Denmark, the United States and any number of nations that do not endorse their beliefs, we must stand united! Instead of speaking out against our president, we must look for ways to support him and his efforts to protect us against tyranny. In using any event, of any nonpolitical type, as a platform to preach dissent is not only wrong but is also detrimental to America.

America allows free speech, but there is a time and a place for speaking out against things not of your beliefs. That is one of our greatest freedoms. Too many abuse this freedom and hide behind our Constitution. To them we must say, "Enough is enough."
