Letter: Christians can be just as violent as Islamists
Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006 | 12:30 p.m.
Throughout the world Islamists are rioting and trashing embassies, protesting cartoons that denigrated Muhammad.
Right-wing talk show hosts are reveling in their smugness about the "so-called religion of peace."
A particularly gutter-mouthed talk show host, Michael Savage in San Francisco, is frothing at these "Islamo Fascists." So many of us just can't understand how so-called religious people could act in such an irreligious fashion.
Just to put the whole picture into a more understandable perspective, here in the United States between 1989 and 2004 there were 24 murders and/or attempted murders at abortion clinics. In that same period there were 181 bombings and arsons and/or attempted bombings or arsons.
I am not mitigating the actions of the irate Islamists, but they were not involved in any of the abortion clinic attacks - those attacks were made by our own homegrown religious rightists.
Both of these groups espouse that they are doing God's work and carrying out His proscriptions.
I have my doubts, but that's easy for me to say. I'm agnostic.
