Design to be unveiled

Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006 | 7:13 a.m.

By Tom Gorman

The design of a $50 million medical research center near downtown Las Vegas will be publicly unveiled today, bearing the unmistakable iconoclastic signature of master architect Frank Gehry.

Gehry characterized the project as "the mouse that roared" because, despite its relatively diminutive size, it is expected to be the showcase architectural statement in Union Park.

The medical building, he said, will be "more ordinary - it will be quieter, peaceful, with warm, friendly rooms." At doctors' requests, special attention was given to walking distances from the entry to the various exam and diagnostic rooms.
