Letter: Outrage over cartoons is also free expression

Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006 | 8:28 a.m.

Has anyone paid any attention to the hypocrisy surrounding the controversy over the cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad? Great numbers have taken the stand that the publication of the cartoons are an exercise in free expression. While I view the cartoons as showing a lack of respect for the Islamic religion, I do believe the publication of such as an exercise in free expression. Where I believe hypocrisy becomes involved is the condemnation of the Muslim outrage. If one values and promotes the concept of free expression, then one must accept the outrage being expressed by the Muslim community as just that: exercising the concept of free expression. Even those condemning the Muslim outrage are simply participating in free expression.

However, when the issue becomes the exercise of free expression, one may wish to consider how hypocritical they appear when condemning those participating in the concept of free expression.
