Letter: Smoking affects everyone around you

Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006 | 12:31 p.m.

The Feb. 1 letter from smoker Billie Jean Kassel, headlined "Keep to your area if smoke bothers you," demonstrates the arrogance of most smokers.

As Kassell suggests, I do stay in the nonsmoking area when I'm in a public place. But that doesn't stop the smokers, most of whom feel they have a God-given right to smoke, from lighting up and puffing away, despite all the nonsmoking signs in those areas. It happens in restaurants, in casinos, at the airport and even at Cashman Field.

I travel a lot and always request a nonsmoking hotel room and nonsmoking rental cars. But even that's no guarantee that I'll get a room or a car that doesn't reek of cigarette smoke, because most smokers think they have a right to smoke whenever and wherever they please, despite the signs and despite my right to enjoy a meal, a ballgame or sleep in a hotel room without being subjected to their nasty cigarette smoke.

Smokers who play the "rights" card are overlooking the fact that their nasty, disgusting and unhealthy habit affects everyone around them.
