Letter: Mission in Iraq just a macho showdown
Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006 | 12:31 p.m.
George W. Bush would be wise to heed the old saying to be careful what you wish for. After going to war against Iraq to find those phantom weapons of mass destruction, which we heard about ad nauseum in the rush to get us into war, there were none found - zero, zilch, nada. And no nukes were found, either, for the mushroom cloud crowd that surrounds him. At best, President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were flat wrong; at worst, they lied and exaggerated the facts (no credibility).
When that turkey didn't fly, they hatched the democracy idea as the reason we were there, changing horses in mid-stream without really thinking it through.
Bush charged on, demanding democratic elections, failing to recognize that even though Iraqi civilization is centuries older than ours, in reality they are centuries away from us in thought. Can anyone say Hamas? Civil war?
There is way too much testosterone in the Middle East for my liking. The Oval Office suffers from the same problem.
