Letter: Smoking, drinking not comparable

Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 | 12:31 p.m.

Regarding Billie Jean Kassel's Feb. 1 letter, "Keep to your area if smoke bothers you":

I am a nurse and have never smoked, but I have lost my mother and dad, who were both young, because of their smoking habits. Both of my brothers, who are younger then myself, both have smoked, had heart attacks and bypass surgeries.

I know the problems of secondhand smoke as a young child - I was around it all the time. I had bronchitis and colds constantly. As a adult, I can tell you that we, as nonsmokers, do have a say if your smoke is going into our body.

Comparing it to alcohol, as Kassel did, is stupid. When someone is drinking alcohol beside you, he is not endangering you. I will always tell someone who is smoking beside me to put that cigarette on the other side away from me. I have that right.
