Letter: What is nonessential freedom anyway?
Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006 | 7:36 a.m.
I would like to add a comment to Elbert W. Lemmon's Jan. 22 letter.
He suggests that we give up some "nonessential" freedoms for a little more safety. I personally feel that not being spied upon without just cause as an essential freedom, so I tried to think of some of those freedoms that would be nonessential. I couldn't come up with any.
Maybe someone could come up with a list of some essential and some nonessential freedoms for those of us who just don't get it.
I suspect that if given the right to suspend nonessential freedoms in the name of protecting us, our Big Brother in Washington would find that all freedoms are nonessential.
