Letter: It’s time for some detailed information
Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006 | 8:44 a.m.
The state of the union is strong, says the president. So now the bloom is off the rose and all his political capital has been spent.
When has any president ever given a real assessment of our situation? I can get all the cheerleading I want at a high school football game. What I want is real information and real plans that can produce real results.
How about our president acknowledging that health care is approaching a financial disaster and what is it he proposes to do? He could have said Iraq is a mess, but we ask that you support our goals because doing otherwise would have terrible consequences for all of us.
Why not admit we are losing the race for intellectual dominance within the world's industrialized community while we allow the illegal immigration of millions of uneducated workers? Illegal immigration benefits a few but is a net drag on our country's financial well-being.
He could have said, "Here is my strategy to fix these problems. Detailed plans will follow soon."
So how about some candor and some real leadership for a change? We are not as dumb as some in Washington might think. I am willing to go along for the ride just as long as I don't have to wear a blindfold.
