Letter: Feeling distressed about State of the Union

The State of the Union address left me devastated.

President Bush said, "Let us never forget the sacrifices of our military families." (At that time Cindy Sheehan was being booked in the Capitol Police headquarters.)

Bush also stated how great things are working out with bringing democracy to the Middle East. "Iraq is gaining freedom ... we are winning." (Palestine has democratically elected Hamas to rule over them. Its platform is the annihilation of Israel.)

Bush wants Hamas to "work for a lasting peace." (I think perhaps the next person to become president of the United States needs to have had some experience outside of the United States, or at the very least, to know the names of leaders of other countries.)

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she didn't have a clue that Hamas could win. This is the person advising the "leader of the free world."

As a Baby Boomer, I resent the fact that Bush wants to make his tax cuts permanent, while on the other hand he is saying "America shouldn't fear the economic future" while telling us how "in trouble" Social Security is.

My suggestion is to have his corporate friends (Enron, Halliburton, et al.) contribute to Social Security, as we individuals did for the disasters of Katrina, which FEMA screwed up.

Bush said he didn't want to betray the public trust. In my case, sir, too late!
