Letter: Keep to your area if smoke bothers you

Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 | 8:47 a.m.

I have read recent letters to the editor in which nonsmokers feel they have more rights than smokers. When they are in nonsmoking areas, they do have more rights.

As a smoker, I have my rights in the smoking area. I do not need nonsmokers sitting down beside me (when they see me smoking) and start waving their hands around.

They may have an alcoholic drink in their hand, and since I don't drink I don't like to smell the alcohol. They might also be one of those people who douse themselves with perfume or cologne before they leave home. That also is unpleasant smelling.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty of it all -- who does have all the rights? Living in the United States of America gives each and every one of us rights and privileges. You have the right to douse yourself with cologne and perfume. I have my right to smoke.

So if you are a nonsmoker, stay in the nonsmoking area and let smokers enjoy the smoking area. Another little tidbit -- my driving skills are not impaired by smoking tobacco. Can you say the same if you are a nonsmoker but indulge in the alcoholic drinks?
