Drummer Irv Kluger, 84, is in the intensive care unit of Sunrise Hospital after suffering a heart attack in the hospital's emergency room last week.
Kluger's daughter, Jessica Marciel, said he was taken to the hospital Thursday because he was experiencing a stroke.
"He wasn't feeling quite right," Marciel said. "While they were checking him, he had a massive heart attack."
Marciel described his condition as critical, but stable.
Kluger suffered a series of minor strokes last year, but continued to perform Friday nights at Pogo's Tavern, a gig he has held for almost 20 years.
He has been a professional drummer since age 13, performing in clubs in his native New York City.
During his career he has performed with such legends as Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton and Count Basie.
