Editorial: A season for optimism
That was 2,000 years ago in a Middle East that was brutally ruled by the Romans and filled with intrigue, troubled political alliances and discussions of rebellion. The political and military powers in the region have changed countless times, and technology has moved from swords to missiles. But the region, in some ways, has changed little.
Letter: Study San Diego's way to ease traffic jams
High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes give individual drivers the option to pay to join carpoolers (for whom usage is free) in these lanes only if they choose to do so to avoid congestion. The Las Vegas Sun might take a look at the Interstate 15 FasTrac program in San Diego, a project I happened to be directly involved in as a project manager.
Letter: McCain's time has come and gone
The reason I ask is that Sen. John McCain was born on Aug. 29, 1936, and is now 70 years old. In 2008 he will be 72, and if elected to the presidency, he would be 76 at the conclusion of his first term.
THE YEAR IN BUSINESS
In the world of Southern Nevada business, 2006 will be remembered as a year that real estate cooled, and multibillion-dollar projects began heating up.
Reid deft in getting White Pine bill passed
WASHINGTON - By many measures, Senate Majority Leader-elect Harry Reid's ability to pass the White Pine County land bill in the dead of night on the final day of Congress was a major coup for Nevada.
MOMENTS 2006
As Mike Metzger did a back flip on his motorcycle over the fountains at Caesars Palace, what struck me was how very little time he was actually in the air. It went so quickly, I had no idea what I had captured until I downloaded the pictures. This picture got a lot of attention because Metzger was updating Evel Knievel's failed jump on New Year's Day 1968.
Home means dignity
At times, Linda Lopez could not accept that she was homeless.
Carpenter accused of breaking own rules
When Richard Carpenter took over the Community College of Southern Nevada in August 2004, one of his first acts as president was to attack what he said was rampant nepotism, cronyism and excessive bureaucracy at the college.
Editorial: Laying wreaths of honor
Morrill Worcester credits his initial decision to take the wreaths to Arlington to a boyhood trip to Washington, D.C., which included a visit to the cemetery. Fifteen years ago, when his Worcester Wreath Co. had 4,000 extra wreaths, he thought of putting them there.
Letter: Rumsfeld deserves no plaudits for failures
I am not a liberal nor shortsighted, and I served for more than 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. Donald Rumsfeld may have had a grand vision of reshaping the armed forces and an agenda to get it done, but after 2001 he could not get past his own poor decision-making and the unilateral diplomatic policies of the Bush administration.
Editorial: A gift of a new beginning
Newton suggested taking him to a shelter. Winn would have run if he weren't so badly hurt, but after listening to Newton for 30 minutes, he agreed to go to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
