Letter: What’s the big deal about the pig farm?

Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006 | 8:35 a.m.

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's Dec. 13 article by Mike Trask, concerning the proposed school to be built out in North Las Vegas near RC Farms that is owned by Robert Combs, I would just like Mr. Combs to know that there are a great many of us out here who appreciate what he does for the community and the pigs.

I'm sure when Mr. Combs chose the location he is in, he never thought the North Las Vegas community would build as close to him as it has done. When I lived in North Las Vegas, just 5 miles from the pig farm, while the smells were not always pleasant, I did enjoy them nonetheless, knowing Mr. Combs was out there doing something good and productive with the leftovers from the buffets.

I'm sure the "new" homeowners out there bought their homes knowing the pig farm was there, and also knowing about the smell. If they chose to purchase a home in that area, how can they now have the nerve to fight the building of a school in the same neighborhood? The smells are the same whether at home or at school.

If kids can play in neighborhoods where there are unpleasant odors, surely they can learn in them as well. If a school is necessary due to the growth in the area, then what better place than next to a working farm where perhaps they can one day take a field trip and learn how pig farms are run? Who knows, maybe one day, one of those youngsters will find the answer to odor elimination.
