Letter: Praise for those who finished marathon

Regarding Dan West's Dec. 14 letter, "Marathon runners didn't all run fast":

Based on Mr. West's comments about the last person to finish the marathon, it is clear he has never attempted to complete a marathon. Not everybody is in the marathon to run the "race."

Some people have set out to accomplish what may seem impossible for them. As someone who has run two marathons myself, 26.2 miles is a long distance to travel in one day. I would challenge Mr. West to walk backward for 26.2 miles, as he said he could, and see how long it takes him.

Those who finished the marathon, whether it took two hours or nine hours, should be congratulated, not ridiculed.
