Letter: Wage gap keeps segregation alive
If the Supreme Court rules that school cannot work to further integration, then segregation will be allowed to continue. The segregation of today works in the class system by allowing those with enough money to isolate themselves from others.

Editorial: FEMA still a disaster
While the amount that FEMA has recouped represents less than 1 percent of its misspent aid for 2005, the agency has this year doled out millions in unjustified aid. It includes $17 million in rental assistance paid to families who already were living rent-free in trailers or apartments provided by FEMA, according to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress.

According to a story by USA Today, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims has been investigating a program created in 2000 to compensate Cold War-era workers who developed cancer and other illnesses from exposure to dangerous substances at government and contractor-run facilities - including the Nevada Test Site. The facilities were involved in nuclear weapons production.

These words from a Friday Sun story continue to reverber- ate: "The Sun requested the minutes of those meetings and a list of the committee's members. The Sun also asked to view the scoring of the bids and (UMC boss Lacy) Thomas' recommendation to the committee. The hospital has refused to grant any of those requests." What is so stupefying about this is that Thomas is the head of a public hospital. The committee minutes are from meetings during which medical staffers rejected Thomas' selection of a consultant. Letter: Electoral College fails American voters
We need to do away with the Electoral College so that everyone who votes will know that his or her vote does count. We don't use the Electoral College on the state or local levels, where it all seems to be working very well.
Letter: Federal appointments not Bush's strong suit
We can start with Michael Brown, the former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who days after Hurricane Katrina had no clue as to how to bring relief to our fellow citizens suffering on the Gulf Coast.
