Letter: Resorts should embrace monorail
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006 | 7:10 a.m.
As a libertarian, I feel conflicted at times as to what powers the government should have. The problem is, we don't live in a libertarian society, and since we don't, the government unfortunately has to provide for our needs on occasion.
I was in the Contemporary Hotel at Walt Disney World last June. The monorail travels right through the center of the hotel there. It was so convenient and enjoyable to just hop on and travel to Epcot, other hotels and Walt Disney World with no additional fees, and at convenient times.
I see all the megaresorts and all of the outrageous expenses they mount to make Las Vegas a unique business and pleasure experience, and yet getting from one resort to another is a major undertaking with traffic and weather.
It seems to me that the resorts that would benefit most from a mass transit system should jump on the chance to make the monorail free, frequent and fun, and should gladly support the system. If they don't see the value, then I think the government should see to it, to maintain our competitive edge.
