Letter: Tourists already pay for too much in Vegas
Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006 | 7:43 a.m.
Half of the potential revenue sources for a new arena would involve taxing tourists.
If Las Vegas wants an arena, especially an NBA arena, Las Vegans or the NBA team should pay for it.
Stop forcing more taxes on tourists. (I visit Las Vegas at least once a year.) Your car rental taxes are already outrageous, especially after that last addition was tacked on; your room taxes are high enough, especially considering more and more affordable hotels are being torn down for hotels for the "young and rich" crowd with higher and higher room rates.
If Las Vegas is going to "benefit" from an arena, then you pay for it.
And if an NBA franchise can afford to pay athletes $100 million, then the NBA franchise should pay for it.
Stop making the public pay for fancy new arenas. And stop making tourists pay for community improvements that should be supported by you who live in the community.
