Letter: Actions show real support for troops

Once again letter writer James J. Poupard has picked up his "poison pen" to chastise our president ("War casualties are on president's head," Nov. 27).

In criticizing the war in Iraq, Poupard states "Support the Troops" was just a code for supporting Bush in his "illegal" war against the Iraqi people. The war is not "illegal." It was supported by Congress. And, so far as the slogan goes, it was/is not the "code" that Poupard states.

How many American people have "supported the troops" by sending them care packages of gloves, scarves, socks and food items? I belong to an organization that has done just exactly that. We "support our troops." President Franklin D. Roosevelt kept World War II going on for much longer than he had to because it was bringing the country out of a depression. This, of course, made him look good to the American people.

Mr. Poupard quotes statistics regarding the casualties in Iraq and goes on to say, "Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden are not responsible for these deaths," while our entry into World War II was for the purpose of containing Nazism and Fascism to Europe, which it did. Using Mr. Poupard's rationale, Hitler cannot be blamed for the deaths of our troops in Europe.
