Letter: With kindness, we can all just get along
Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006 | 7:06 a.m.
I don't believe Pahrump's English-only ordinance should have excluded the use of foreign languages. But I do not think it's out of line to require English to be printed alongside the items in a menu, or an advertisement for a business - it is a matter of just good manners.
When people enter this country, without obtaining official permission (passports) and set up businesses, they should have a little courtesy and invite the local people simply by at least printing menus in English.
I do think the American flag should accompany other national flags as a matter of courtesy. To make it a statute to counter our national constitutional rights is a little dicey. We burn the flags that are worn as a way to discard the old and damaged flags, but when somebody urinates on it and burns it, it is an insult. We might express our dislike of such a thing, but the freedom of expression is at risk any other way.
When millions of people of one nation disregard the legal process of entrance into any country, they are actually invading the receiving country. It is my thinking, if President Bush was dead set on changing the oppressive government of another country, he chose the wrong country. The Mexican people may not have much respect for the law, but most are hard workers and are trying to make a better life for their families.
Thank you Lord for making most people that way. I think with kindness toward each other, and a little education about the laws, we can live in harmony.
