GOING UP
Greg Anthony's jersey
The ex-Rancho High and UNLV star will have his number retired and lifted to the Thomas & Mack Center rafters on Nov. 7. While 50 might seem like a strange number for a point guard, there was strange magic when Anthony was wearing it.
Las Vegas High
The Wildcats were named the best team in Nevada by Sports Illustrated in its high school football preview. But don't be misled by the No. 29 before its name. That's not Las Vegas High's national ranking, just where Nevada ranks alphabetically with the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Bowl game profits
The four Bowl Championship Series games paid out $125.9 million to NCAA institutions. But all Vince Young got was a lousy national championship T-shirt.
Russell Martin
The former 51s catcher caught all 15 innings of the Dodgers game at Phoenix on Friday, then was behind the plate for the game on Saturday. And 84 games prior to that, or roughly 4 in 5, since being recalled from Las Vegas on May 5. The key to his durability: alternating between hot and cold whirlpool baths. How long before he starts appearing in Red Bull ads?
GOING DOWN
Division I-AA
The NCAA has ruled that its Division I-A football bowl games will henceforth be known as the "Football Bowl Subdivision" and the I-AA playoff as the "NCAA Football Championship Subdivision." And you thought Prince was crazy for changing his name.
Gil Reyes' hat
Where did Andre Agassi's trainer/guru get that hat he wore to the U.S. Open on Monday night? Pier 1 Imports? It looked like an upside down lampshade. It was the kind of hat you bring to a hockey game and throw on the ice when Jaromir Jagr scores a hat trick.
