Letter: No reason to continue treading water in Iraq
Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006 | 7:53 a.m.
On the Las Vegas Sun's Aug. 23 Commentary page, political writer Martin Schram correctly observes that George Bush/Dick Cheney/Donald Rumsfeld have essentially led us (poorly) into quicksand in Iraq and that thousands may have died in vain.
In the article he refers to Democrats as "leader-lite," yet positive alternatives to Bush's current "stay the course" plan have been given by Sens. Joe Biden and Carl Levin as well as by Rep. John Murtha.
Perhaps most astounding, however, is that Schram concludes by concurring with Bush that we must not pull out and that "We may not be able to prevent that painful outcome even if we stay ..." Thus, he is suggesting that we do more of the same (which has failed) and send more of our brave young men and women to their deaths with little hope.
Why should we sacrifice more blood and treasure for this continuing mayhem? This is not what should be expected of the greatest country in the world.
Clearly, we need a change in Washington as soon as possible as a strong show of no confidence in the current administration so the situation in Iraq has a chance of success.
